Penshurst RSL's 50th season has finished with the celebration of 2 Grand Final victories.

Our u9s completed an undefeated season by defeating Hurstville United 24-12 in the the Grand Final rain at Begnall Oval on Saturday morning. Under the pump early from an enthusiastic opponent, who scored early for a 6-0 lead, the young rissoles stayed on track to ride out the storm - managing an equaliser before the break. On the resumption, our boys took control through sustained defence and ball control - pushing out to a game winning 24-6 lead. A late try was consolation for Hurstville. Tim Maier-Sotiropolos was named Man-of-the-Match.

The previous evening at Leichhardt Oval, our u15s came from behind to claim the 2nd division title 18-14 over Brighton Seagulls. A tight, tense first half produced a 4-all scoreline. A lack of ball control by our boys helped Brighton gain dominance in the 3rd quarter, who jumped away to a 4-14 lead. Stemming the tide with improved defence and ball control, our boys gained a powerful flow of momentum and produced a stirring 3-try finish - scoring the match winner with 90 seconds remaining. Nathan Power was named Man-of-the-Match.

Congratulations to coaches Peter Knox (u9s) and Paul Homan (u15s), their staff and, especially, their players on terrific 2010 seasons. Both teams have helped celebrate our 50th season in great style. Enjoy..."...we wear the Green and Gold..."

Penshurst RSL will be represented by 2 teams in the Grand Finals of the 2010 season - our u9s and our u15s.

Our u15s play Brighton Seagulls on Friday night at Leichhardt Oval and the u9s kick-off early the next morning at Begnall Park, Belfield. (Unfortunately, Win Jubilee Oval is not available this weekend due to the NRL game between the Dragons and Souths).

Both teams will be representing the club with great pride and will greatly appreciate your Green and Gold support.

Our u10 Greens finished their season on a disappointing note, going down 24-36 in their Final against Arncliffe Scots at Win Jubilee Oval. Penshurst RSL dominated the first half, in possession, in field position and on the scoreboard - leading 18-6 at the break. However, after the break, Scots got on a momentum roll and took over the game, scoring 30 unanswered points before a our boys grabbed a consolation try just before the final whistle.

Well done to the u10 Greens for a strong season, in which they came within 1 game of the Grand Final.

Later in the day, our u15s qualified for their Grand Final by defeating Kingsgrove Colts 28-18 after trailing 16-18 at half-time. After a see-sawing first half that featured 6 tries, the second half settled into a tense battle that our boys eventually won - breaking through in the fourth quarter to score the decisive tries.

The u15s now join our u9s as our Grand Finalists for the 2010 season, the club's 50th season. The club encourages all of those in the Penshurst RSL rugby league community to come and support these 2 teams vie for their respective premierships next weekend.

The penultimate weekend of the 2010 season features two Penshurst RSL teams bidding for a place in their respective Grand Finals. Both games will be played at Win Jubilee Oval on Saturday.

Our u10 Greens play Arncliffe Scots in the morning whilst, in the afternoon, our u15s play the winner of a semi-final replay.

NB: Our other remaining team, our u9s, have already qualified for their Grand Final and have earned the weekend off. They will play the winner of the Hurstville United versus Earlwood Saints final.

On the Saturday of the second week of the 2010 finals series, both Penshurst RSL teams produced inspiring and entertaining football at Hurstville Oval.

Our u9s came out of the blocks against Hurstville United, playing an up-tempo game that kept the pressure on their bigger opponents. Consistency in their play, with good defence and ball control, allowed the u9s to lead all the way to a 40-16 victory that earned them a place in the Grand Final and another week off before the big game.

Contrastingly, our u10 Greens played in a tight, tense tussle, also against Hurstville United. Enduring a tough first-half with little possession, our boys came from behind to grab an 18-12 lead with a couple of minutes remaining. A late penalty was the springboard for a late try that squared the full-time score at 18-all.

This Major Semi was replayed on Sunday morning. After holding their bigger opponents to a 6-12 scoreline at half-time, our u10 Greens finally succumbed to a lack of possession and a big defensive load - losing 6-32 in the Major Semi replay to Hurstville United. The boys live to fight again in next week's do-or-die Final against Arncliffe Scots.

On Sunday at Hurstville Oval, our u14s were eliminated when they lost their Minor Semi-Final against Arncliffe Scots. Missing a number of key players, our boys were in the contest all the way in a see-sawing affair that finished 20-all at full-time. Unfortunately, the u14s were unable to hang on in extra time, conceding the winning try with just 2 minutes remaining.

Our u15s played Brighton Seagulls in their Major Semi-Final in another tight affair. Grabbing an early lead that they maintained for most of the game, the boys looked like they would be able to hang on for victory. But their opponents kept coming to square the score late in the game before a penalty decided the contest in the final minute of play. The u15s are still alive, contesting the Final next week in an attempt to make the Grand Final.
