Penshurst RSL Wins Souths Title

on .

Penshurst RSL has won the under 19s Grand Final in the South Sydney competition for 2006, defeating Mascot Juniors 16-14. The victory was the climax of a very successful season for our young ambassadors, who were fortunate enough to be accepted by Souths into their u19s comp this year. They were also the Minor Premiers.

The Grand Final was played in very wet conditions at Redfern Oval last Sunday, 10th September (in what we are told was the last day of footy before the old Redfern is bulldozed). At times the rain was torrential. In a tough, tense battle, our boys fought back from an early 0-6 deficit to square the ledger shortly before the break at 6-6. In the second stanza, the boys from Penshurst RSL were the more enterprising, scoring 2 terrific wet weather tries that featured impressive ball movement, to skip away to a 16-8 lead. Mascot came back with a try and, as the fulltime bell rang, were pressing our line, trying for a last gasp victory. The desperate Green and Gold defensive line held for a stirring victory.

Congratulations to the under 19s who, along with our under 10 Greens, have claimed premierships for the Green and Gold and done so with pride, good team footy and good sportsmanship. Well done to both teams !!

Craig Stapleton Named in Train-On Squad

on .

Penshurst RSL junior, Craig Stapleton, has been named in the train-on squad for the Australian Tri Nations and Prime Minister’s XIII teams. Craig played every first grade game for Penrith this season and has been signed by Cronulla for the next 2 seasons.

As a long term Penshurst RSL junior, we congratulate Craig on his selection and wish him well in the selections for the Prime Minister’s XIII and the Tri-Nations teams.

UPDATE 19th Sep - Further congratulations to Craig on his selection in the Prime Minister’s XIII that will play Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby on September 30. Craig will be playing from the bench. Good luck Craig, from Penshurst RSL, on your international debut !!!

Results - Grand Finals (Week 20)

on .

Week 20, Grand Final weekend, was very much a mixed bag for Penshurst RSL. On Saturday, our under 10 Greens defended their title at Oki Jubilee with a superb performance, producing a near perfect first half to lead 20-0 at the break. Despite bombing a couple of chances in the second term, the boys went on to a convincing 25-12 victory over their quality opponent, Kogarah Cougars. This was very much a team effort (throughout the season as well as the Grand Final), and every player richly deserves the accolades for their efforts. Congratulations to coach Darren Campbell and his staff. (See item below)

On Sunday, our under 16s suffered the absolute reverse in fortunes – we were on the receiving end of a 0-58 loss at Leichhardt Oval. It is never easy losing by such a margin, but to cop it in a Grand Final is very tough indeed. Our much bigger and stronger opponents, North Ryde, came out hard and fast (as we expected) and quickly posted a big lead. However, when we did have opportunities to fight back into the game, we wasted them through errors and poor options. It was a very tough day for all the boys and was an unfair reflection of their efforts and achievements throughout the year. As they say in the classics, there’s always next year.

Our last team standing, the under 19s, became our third team into the Grand Finals when they won a tough Major Semi, defeating Coogee Wombats 20-14 at Redfern Oval. The boys overcame pre-game dramas (about player eligibility) to establish a 16-0 half-time lead. As expected, Wombats came back at the boys in the second half and narrowed the gap to 16-14. A late try confirmed victory and a place in the Grand Final for the boys. Please get along to support the under 19s in the South Sydney Grand Final at Redfern Oval, 11.30am on Sunday, 10th September.

Under 10s Green Premiers 2006

Penshurst RSL Under 10 Greens have become back to back premiers knocking over highly fancied opponents, Kogarah Cougars 25-12 in the U/10 Division 1 grand final at OKI Jubilee Oval today. Led from the front by Kane Campbell, who scored a try in both halves, the team put on a clinical display in the first half to lead 20-0 relegating Kogarah, who finished the season as minor premiers, to being mere spectators.

In the forwards, Mark Attaya had a sensational game in both attack and defence and was ably assisted by official man of the match, Matt Dufty. That aside, it was truly a great team performance and it is hard to single out players other than to say they all deserve to bask in the glow of their victory. The team performed to the best of their ability and the large Green and Gold contingent at the ground were treated to a high quality game of rugby league. Congratulations to the team staff and parents, but most of all to the boys who displayed tenacity and grit to successfully defend their title.

As the old saying goes, it's much harder to defend a title than it is to win one, and our Under 10s can sleep well tonight knowing that they have achieved both against high quality opposition.

Penshurst RSL take to the field tomorrow with out U/19s playing in a major semi final at Redfern Oval tomorrow at 11:30am, while our U/16s play in the Division 2 Grand Final at Leichhardt Oval at 2:20pm. Try and get along to help lift our boys to victory.

Results - Grand Final Qualifiers 2006

on .

The 3rd week of the Finals series saw 5 Penshurst RSL teams attempting to qualify for their respective Grand Finals. Whilst 2 teams have made it to the big one, unfortunately, 3 of our teams fell just one game short. On Friday night, our under 16s were the first Penshurst RSL team into a Grand Final. Our boys were never headed, running out 20-8 victors over local rival Renown United. We had less luck on Saturday.

Though still in with a chance when trailing 11-14 midway through the 2nd half, our under 9 Golds were not able to come home strongly enough, falling to Arncliffe Scots 11-32. Next up, our under 10 Greens won through to defend their title, earnt with a hard fought 24-17 win over Kingsgrove Colts Blue (after trailing 0-12 early).

Unfortunately, both our under 11s and under 13s  were beaten favourites. Both teams finished successful a season with an uncharacteristically flat performance -  the u11s lost 12-34 to Hurstville United and the u13s 20-30 to Arncliffe Scots.

Our under 19s are still in the running for a Grand Final berth when they play in their Major Semi next Sunday.
