In an historic weekend for the club, 5 of the 8 teams came home with premierships. Not since the mid 70’s has the club experienced such success on the field. The 1st game on Sat saw the u9’s coached by Kevin Hicks, battle with Hurstville. The boys showed great spirit, but were over powered by a bigger side, eventually losing 16-0.Next to play, were the u10's coached by David Cahill. Despite the boys being threatened in the later stages of the1st half, their class shone through in the 2nd half resulting in the boys winning 48-16. The u11’s was a local derby, with the 2 Penshurst teams going head to head. In a major upset, the previously undefeated Green’s were defeated 36-0. The quicker outside backs of the Gold team proved the difference. While the result was disappointing for the Green team after going through the last couple of seasons undefeated, more is sometimes learnt from losing rather than winning. In an enthralling game, our Penshurst u12's drew 6 all with Hurstville to earn the right to be joint premiers. In the major semi, Hurstville defeated our u12's by 40 points and we were given no chance of winning the big game. Adding to this was the fact that coach Sean Saliba was missing 3 keys players through broken arms and illness. But the boys played with great spirit and dominated Hurstville with their solid defence to hang in and earn the draw. Our 13's who have never played semi-final football were up against a Renown side who had defeated them by 40 points in the major semi. At half time with a score line of 26-0 a greater defeat seemed likely. However the boys came out in the 2nd half to score 3 tries to one and eventually lose by 30-12.
On Sunday, the u16's were attempting to go back to back. A difficult task, especially when the u16's were playing for the 2nd division title after claiming the 3rd division title the previous year. Again Penshurst came up against the team who had beaten them in the major semi. However in a game that ebbed and flowed, and with Matt Dufty scoring 4 tries, the u16's eventually won 28-28 to give coach Glen Dufty a well-deserved win. Now he needs to win the 1st Division next year to go 3 peat. A mass of Penshurst supporters then travelled out to Campbelltown stadium to watch our A grade team attempt to win a GF for the 1st time since 1993. Inspired by Captain Damien Hooper who played with an broken foot, and the boys showing great discipline, Penshurst outplayed Eaglevale to win the Grand Final 30-0.
Congratulations to all teams who won their Grand Finals and commiserations to those who were not successful. I'm sure all will learned from the experience and will come back better coaches and players next year.
Grand Final build up has commenced with the release of the Draw. The u9's, u10's, u11's, u12's and u13's are all playing at Jubilee On Sat. On Sunday the 16's are at Redfern Oval and A Grade are playing at Campbelltown Stadium. Best of luck to all teams on the weekend and lets get as many supporters to the games as possible to cheer on the mighty rissoles.
