Despite whole hearted performances from our under 9s and under 11s, neither team was quite able to overcome their opposition in their bids to qualify for their respective Grand Finals. Both teams were defeated by Earlwood Saints.
On Sunday, our last team standing, the under 16s, also failed to qualify for their Grand Final when defeated by Leichhardt Wanderers.
The under 9s, coached by Tas Donnelly, went neck and neck in a see-sawing battle with their bigger opponents and led narrowly at half-time 24-22. Unfortunately, the opposition controlled the ball better in the second term and were able to secure victory 39-29 late in the game. A tremendous effort from our boys who were boosted by the support of 4 boys from our under 8s.
The under 11s, coached by Paul Walsh, started a little sluggishly but hung in there against a much bigger side. Conceding a lot of field position, our boys only trailed 0-8 at the break. In a tightly fought second half, the Rissoles applied a lot of pressure to their opponents but were only able to post the single try, finally going down 5-8. Another great effort where the boys contested the game right up to the full time siren.
Congratulations to the 9s and 11s, especially as they were both appearing in their first finals series. The club is very proud of your efforts and sportsmanship and looks forward to your return next year.
Unfortunately, the Under 16s also fell one game short of the Grand Final when they were well beaten 32-10 by a hungrier Leichhardt Wanderers team. Though still in the game when they trailed 6-10 at half time, our boys were out enthused by their opponents in the second half.
While it is disappointing that the 16s will not be defending their title in next week's Grand Final, they have represented the club very well this season and can be proud of their efforts.
